I took a break from my early morning routine of doctoral studies to greet my wife and son. As I entered the dining room, I heard Douglass Ali say "mmmmmmmm" with great pleasure. My wife announced that he was feeding himself. As I rounded the corner of the high chair I was greeted by a yogurt covered son! Feeding himself included putting the spoon in his mouth backwards getting most of it up his nose and all over his face. I also noticed that he had made some yogurt artwork all over his tray. Douglass continued, stabbing the spoon vigorously into his cup of yogurt and putting it in his mouth in whatever way he wished. Another milestone achieved, however messily.

I was just speaking with my mother about the new disaster film 2012. While we disagreed about the merits of the film (mom loved it, I hated it), we agreed that as African Americans, the portrayal of our race was quite gratifying. 2012 featured not only an African American President (talk about art imitating life!) but two key characters who were African American Ph.D's. A central protagonist of the film is a black geologist who discovers the impending end of the world. Not only does he provide leadership in the effort to save the human race from extinction, but at a critical moment, provides moral clarity that saves thousands more lives and the souls of the surviving world leaders. This character made a black man want to stand up and shout Amen.

This movie reminded me of other recent films that featured people of African descent as saviors of humanity. One of the most magnificent and thought provoking was the film Children of Men. In Children of Men, the threat to human survival was not geological, but reproductive. People had stopped being able to have babies. But then hope arrives in the body of a young black woman who is miraculously pregnant. A scene late in the film after the arrival of her child shows this woman being escorted by her white protector through a raging battle field that suddenly becomes completely silent at the sight of her. This film turned the much vilified image of the unwed, young black mother completely on its head.

Though his films are generally less profound than Children of Men, Will Smith's characters save the world pretty much every summer. Most recently he was a military scientist saving the world from a viral apocalypse in I Am Legend. Earlier in his career he was saving the world from an alien invasion in Independence Day.

What I find fascinating about these movies is that they go far beyond simply portraying blacks in a positive light. Lots of movies these days show blacks as middle class professionals doing good things. Movies like Children of Men however, portray blacks as potential contributors to the very salvation of human civilization. Such a portrayal is the antithesis of the dehumanizing images of blacks in film that have haunted us since Birth of a Nation.

This emerging image of blacks as saviors of civilization is very much in line with the way blacks are viewed in Baha'i teaching. Baha'u'llah referred to blacks as "the pupil of the eye...dark in color but a fountain of light and the revealer of the contingent world." The Baha'i Faith teaches that blacks have "great gifts of mind and heart" that they will offer to the creation of a new, global civilization, in Biblical terms, the Kingdom of God on earth. Could it be that films like 2012 are preparing popular consciousness for acceptance of black men and women as sources of spiritual and moral leadership?

I wanted Baha'i Thought readers to know about an awesome workshop that will be taking place at Bosch Baha'i School in December entitled, "Spiritual Mastery and Mental Health". The info is below. I particulary hope readers on the West Coast take advantage of this opportunity and then comment on your experience on this blog so the rest of us can learn from you! Also, learn more about the Baha'i Association for Mental Health here.

Dear Friends,We hope to see you at the BAMH workshop at Bosch to be held on Dec 18-20, 2009 entitled "Spiritual Self-Mastery and Mental Health". Drawing upon the explanations of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, this workshop will focus on the nature of the soul, its relationship to the rational mind, its interaction with the reactive physical self, and the stages of spiritual development. It will feature experiential and interactive exercises exploring the processes of prayer and meditation and deep listening, and it will explore their practical applications in increasing unity and opening options for acts of service, all essential to intensive programs of growth. It will be facilitated by Dulamdary Enkhtor, M.A., Ph. D. candidate in Clinical and Community Psychology, and Mary K. Radpour, LCSW, psychotherapist in private practice. The workshop is not limited to mental health professionals, and is open and suitable to wider audience. Please, see below the link to the detailed information on Bosch website.http://guest.cvent.com/i.aspx?1Q,P1,CC4548BE-32C2-4F3E-A307-6357849B66FF

I think I'm turning into one of those dads who just want to talk about their kids all the time. Oh well, I guess there are worse states of being, right?
Douglass Ali had another busy month of milestones and adventures. One of the things he got to do was meet some old friends of his mommy's from her college days.
He also figured out that in addition to taking all the pots and pans out of the cupboard, he can also crawl inside there and hang around a bit.
His walking has given way to running which apparently works better if you also giggle while you do it. Maybe giggling would get me running around a bit myself. He continues with his fascination with placing objects inside other objects. Apparently his mother's cell phone ended up in the trash because of this fascination. More recently, he has discovered climbing. He will spend quite a bit of time trying to figure out how to climb onto or into something. I'm certain I'm going to discover him on top of the refrigerator one of these days. The biggest adventure of the month was celebrating his cousin's birthday. That's where he discovered one of those things that's full of multicolored balls that kids jump around in. He. Loved. It.
Finally, he's getting into the swing of the "play date" thing. He had several visits with other Baha'i kids in the area. Good times indeed. Let's see what the next month will bring!

Formal gardens surrounding Bahji, where Baha'u'llah spent His last years. Also His resting place, the holiest place to Baha'is. [Baha'i Media]

"I never dreamed, when I first encountered the Baha'i Faith as a young adult, that one day I would write a book about the Founder, Baha'u'llah, whose birthday Baha'is celebrate around the world November 12. Yet hearkening back to that time of search I clearly recall that my attention was captured by two things: the extraordinary life of Baha'u'llah and the exquisite beauty of His writings. How could someone who lived the better part of His life as a prisoner and exile - often in the most deplorable and hostile conditions - not only endure, but consistently produce the most inspiring and insightful writings?"

You can read the rest of Journey to a Sacred City, a short essay about my spiritual questions and how I eventually answered them in The Story of Baha'u'llah: Promised One of All Relgions, on the U.S. Baha'i site.

I enjoy listening to other people's personal stories, too, like this short video of a handful of new Baha'is who share a few of their own questions and something of their spiritual journeys - part of the new U.S. Baha'i Video Library.

Baha'u'llah Himself took seriously the questions of those sincerely looking for the truth. He wrote the Book of Certitude in response to the questions of the Bab's eldest uncle - whom Baha'u'llah told to write down all of his questions and bring them to Him. In answering this one man's questions, Baha'u'llah changed profoundly our vision of the religions we thought we knew.

As Baha'is celebrate this Holy Day we celebrate this new vision brought by Baha'u'llah: that the religions called by different names are, in reality, one religion unfolding over time, their separate Prophets inspired by One Source, their sacred guidance flowing together into one divine purpose - the upliftment of the human spirit and the evolution of human consciousness.

But don't take someone else's word for it. Investigate for yourself. You might like to begin with this video on the life of Baha'u'llah, with highlights of Baha'i community. Of course, for more compelling detail I recommend you read The Story of Baha'u'llah.

http://meditationsonbahaullah.blogspot.com/2009/11/but-dodo-youll-live-in-street.html But Dodo, you'll live on a street! http://meditationsonbahaullah.blogspot.com/2009/11/but-dodo-youll-live-in-street.html Dear Lord, it's nearly a month since I last wrote. I like to write at least every couple of weeks, but life turned to chaos on me this time. I have a good excuse, though. On October 25, we got word that Steve's father died unexpectedly in his sleep. This was astonishing news, because he was never ill. He was 85 and living a full life. He'd gone to bed at 10pm as he always did, after sending Steve an email about how to shift folders of email messages in his mail reader. And that was it. Steve's mum found him still in bed the following morning, an hour at least past his usual rising time. Steve and I hurriedly prepared to fly to the other end of the country to be with her and help with arrangements. I came back after the funeral, but Steve is still up north with his mum and won't be home until mid-November.

While I was up there, Steve and I and our daughter went to visit the property that Steve and I hope to buy next year. Wow, it was overwhelming. At nearly 5 acres, it is huge compared to the little town house we've been living in since 1991. The view to the east and north is spectacular. I'd go for the place just for that. The property is located about the middle (in terms of height) of a ridge on one side of a valley, and the view in the east/north direction is of the valley plunging down below you, with the hills in the distance on the other side of the valley in the shape of a curve like an amphitheatre. The whole area is covered in native bush. It's just beautiful. You can't see a house in any direction.

This is what prompted me to come up with the title for this blog entry. It comes from George Eliot's Middlemarch, at the end of the story when Dorothea (her sister Celia calls her Dodo) tells Celia that she has decided to marry Will Ladislaw. Celia is shocked because Will is a politician and does not have an estate, and the marriage means that Dorothea will move from the country to London. In the DVD version, Celia says in horror: "But Dodo, you'll be among queer people and live on a street!" That is the line that runs through my mind when I think of the property Steve and I hope to move to next year. I love it because it isn't on a street and I can't see any neighbours. But it doesn't have the feel of an English estate, with the sprawling grasslands; it is more a small cottage on a lawn set up high amongst native bush. The idea of living there is to me like living in paradise. If it happens, it'll be the work of Providence and I'll have the Lord to thank for making my dreams come true.

The regional specialist, through accompaniment and encouragement, builds the capacity of the friends at the cluster level to more systematically respond to seeker inquiries. And in some clusters, this capacity is showing itself in beautiful and practical ways. Here is a report from a regional specialist about a B-stage cluster in the Northeast region, sharing a wonderful example of systematic follow-up.

I thought you might enjoy reading this wonderful invitation sent by my seeker contact for the __ cluster (she is also the area teaching committee secretary). This is the kind of follow through I try to encourage in all the clusters in the Northeast, and __ is exemplary in this regard. She not only invites the seekers to activities, she also lets all the communities know that the seekers have been invited and urges them to stay current on reporting their events to her, as well as watching for seeker contacts. I would like to clone her. . . .

Loving regards,

Dear Friends--

Below is a letter that I sent out to seekers in __ from the national Seeker Response system.

I also sent out an invitation for these seekers to participate in one of the "Reflections on the Life of the Spirit" courses that is starting.

If your personal or your community's meetings—devotionals, Holy Day celebrations, firesides, etc.—is not on this list, it is because I do not yet have information about the event that you are hosting. Please send me the news about any activities that you are hosting so that I can be sure to include it on this regular (monthly) mailing.

Dear __

On behalf of the Bahá’ís of __, I would like to cordially invite you to attend our upcoming devotional meetings and Holy Day celebrations (listed below). Bahá’í meetings and celebrations are open to people of all backgrounds and Faiths, and there is no cost to participate.

As you may be aware, a fundamental teaching of the Bahá’í Faith is that each soul must freely and independently investigate the Truth for himself or herself. The purpose of all Bahá’í meetings is to contribute to the spiritual upliftment of the individual and of society. Bahá’í are not permitted to proselytize or to put any pressure on others to change their beliefs. Please be assured that you can attend any or all of these meetings without any expectations of "conversion" or even of continuing participation.

If you would like more information and/or would like to attend, please contact the person who is hosting the meeting. Please do not hesitate to contact me as well with your concerns and questions.

With warm regards,

Kidnapping and Torture of a Baha'i in Shiraz

Posted: 03 Nov 2009

A Baha'i has been kidnapped, persecuted, and tortured by unknown individuals in Shiraz.

According to HRANA [Human Rights Activists News Agency], based on reports from the Baha'i Committee of Human Rights Activists in Iran, Mr. Rouh'u'llah Rezaie, a 45-year-old Baha'i in Shiraz, was stopped, kidnapped, and moved to an unknown place as he was returning home, to his wife and child, from a gas station early in the morning on 8/8/1388 [October 27,2009]. There, he was threatened, insulted, and subjected to a simulated hanging in a show-execution. He was left naked in extreme cold, and different parts of his hands, chest, and forehead were burnt by cigarettes. Finally, he was released on a road in the suburbs of Shiraz.

It should be noted that Mr. Rezaie was imprisoned for five years in 1360 [1971], when he was 18, in Adel Abad prison in Shiraz. He has endured the most terrible conditions and all possible physical and psychological pressure due to his religious beliefs.

As you read, you will see the beautiful coherence between all the core activities. You will see descriptions of gatherings that superlatively implement the ideal of unity in diversity. You will see teaching teams lovingingly accompanying the hosts, who are both doing this for the first time. And you will see that these gatherings are being organized and hosted by members of the community of interest. Now, what do we mean by “community of interest”? It is someone who is not a declared Bahá’í but is participating in the core activities, such as attending a study circle. What is truly exciting about these two stories is that the member of the community of interest is not just a participant—she is the principal protagonist of the core activity that she hosts!

So, first is the story of a seeker who has already been actively teaching a children’s class. She prepared a devotional in which the students each recited prayers. And more!

Dearest Friends,

Friday night was yet another bounty the Blessed Beauty bestowed upon us. Those of us who were able to witness this were humbled. I am so moved and exhausted it is hard to explain. My words could never be enough. . . .

As you all know, __ is a mother from the community of interest who began to teach a children’s class towards the end of the last IPG cycle. The children’s class teachers that had been accompanying her in this service consulted with her about plans for the next expansion phase. They shared the vision of building a spiritual community. She was very open, and said that there are already potluck gatherings on her block, so she decided to now organize a devotional gathering too!

Last Saturday, she hosted a devotional gathering for the first time. She prepared each student in her children’s class to recite a quote, as well as sing 2 songs. The children, ranging in age from 4 to 6 read prayers with her assistance. She also read a Bahá’í prayer.

3 mothers and 1 grandmother, as well as a local believer attended. They were impressed by the children and their ability to recite the verses of God.

The second is another devotional conducted by a member of the community of interest. In this case, a teaching team is accompanying participants in Book 1 study circles to host devotionals, and doing this as their focus for their cluster’s latest expansion phase.

Last night our team carried out its third devotional during this expansion phase. This was part of our team’s plan to accompany the seekers in our Book 1 study circle to co-host a devotional. One of the participants had attended her first devotional gathering during the last cycle. Her heart is aglow with the love of God.

The evening began with a tasty feast! Attending were 21 people from different cultures, backgrounds, ethnicities and religions, including people from Pakistan, Morocco, Panama, Cuba, Iran and Hawaii. The host opened with the following words of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá:

If a small number of people gather lovingly together, with absolute purity and sanctity, with their hearts free of the world, experiencing the emotions of the Kingdom and the powerful magnetic forces of the Divine, and being at one in their happy fellowship, that gathering will exert its influence over all the earth. The nature of that band of people, the words they speak, the deeds they do, will unleash the bestowals of Heaven, and provide a foretaste of eternal bliss. The hosts of the Company on high will defend them, and the angels of the Abha Paradise, in continuous succession, will come down to their aid.

Everyone contributed to the devotions. The youth from Pakistan and Morocco chanted prayers in Arabic from the Qur’an and played an Islamic song by Michael Jackson. The evening also included a beautiful Buddhist parable and an indigenous prayer for unity. The friends joined together in song and closed with a rap praising the All-Glorious. The evening closed with new bonds of friendship.

Last night was another example of the transformative power of the Institute process!

Humbly,

http://teaching.bahai.us/2009/11/these-not-wonderful-problems-to-have.html "Are these not wonderful problems to have?" http://teaching.bahai.us/2009/11/these-not-wonderful-problems-to-have.html I guess we “spoke too soon” with last week’s story on the devotional gatherings at the Great Lakes Naval Station in the Waukegan, IL (*C) cluster. Here is an exciting update—these regular devotional gatherings at the naval base have led to some recent declarations! It shows the power of a core activity combined with a receptive population combined with systematic service of a dedicated group of friends.

Dear N,

You asked for a Great Lakes Naval Station update regarding the 4 recent declarations.

Last week, one young man, __, man declared his today after his second visit to the devotional gathering. He was leaving the Navy due to an illness. Another young man. __, verbally declared. I was giving J one of the necklaces that has a Bahá’í prayer for protection written on it. __ said he wanted one of those necklaces, and I explained that the Navy regulations allow us to give these only to Bahá’ís. He then replied that he considered himself a Bahá’í—so we made plans to complete his enrollment at the next week’s devotional. . . .

15 recruits attended that devotional gathering—a record. One of the men had brought 6 or 7 friends. A young lady brought 2 friends. We had a few returnees as well. Amazing.

The following week, one young man started out by saying (before the prayers) that he had wanted to declare last week but had been on duty, so could not come. __ from last week also wanted to declare. After opening prayers, we decided to split the group between those wanting to declare and those who were seekers. When we did this, 2 female recruits who had asked a lot of questions last week said they wanted to declare, too. This was astonishing.

We shared Anna's presentation with all 4 of these individuals with the help of a Bahá’í recruit and a local Bahá’í.

The spirit is contagious. We have again run out of the larger prayer books that we have been giving recruits who declare. We are nearly out of the necklaces with the prayer for protection. In a small way, these were a key element for inviting these souls to the Lord's banquet table. We are also out of the new registration cards. Are these not wonderful problems to have?

"O Lord, increase my astonishment at Thee!"

With gratitude to the Blessed Beauty for His teaching. May He let us continue to be of help.

Warmly,

M

http://www.bahaithought.com/2009/11/good-without-god.html Good Without God http://www.bahaithought.com/2009/11/good-without-god.html
The atheism ads have now arrived in my own city of Boston. Check it out:

Beside ads beckoning believers to explore Islam, attend services at the Boston Chinese Evangelical Church, or learn about the healing powers of Christian Science, the walls of the city’s subway cars will make room this month for another creed: nonbelief.

A group called the Boston Area Coalition of Reason has spent $11,000 to buy ads on more than 200 subway cars on the Red Line and Green Line to raise awareness about people who believe that God is a myth. Surveys suggest that they account for an increasing number of Americans.

The ads, which were unveiled yesterday and will be up for the next month, are set in a background of blue sky with puffy clouds. The bold-lettered message reads: “Good without God? Millions of Americans Are.’’

“The point of this ‘Good without God’ campaign is to reach out to the millions of humanists, atheists, and agnostics living in the United States,’’ said Fred Edwords, head of the United Coalition of Reason, which is sponsoring the campaign in Boston, as well as similar efforts in New York, New Jersey, and Chicago. “Nontheists sometimes don’t realize there’s a community out there for them, because they’re inundated with religious messages at every turn. So we hope this will serve as a beacon and let them know they aren’t alone.’’

The national coalition, funded by an anonymous donor, has already sponsored ads this year on billboards and transit systems in cities including Dallas; Charleston, S.C.; Des Moines; Phoenix; and New Orleans, with the message: “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone.’’

You can read the whole story here.

Anyone familiar with this blog knows that I yawn in the face of the so called 'New Atheism'. This article bugged me though. Not because there is anything wrong with people of any belief system promoting their views or trying to alert those with similar beliefs that they are not alone. What bugged me was the following portion:

They also point to polls suggesting that the numbers of nonbelievers are increasing.

A 2007 Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, for example, found that 20 percent of Americans surveyed between the ages of 18 and 25 say they have no religious affiliation or consider themselves atheists or agnostics, nearly double the percentage of those who said that in a similar survey 20 years ago.

Another Pew survey that year found 12 percent of Americans surveyed who were 20 and older described themselves as not religious, up from 8 percent in 1987.

The author of this article lumps being 'unaffiliated' or describing oneself as not religious together with being atheist or agnostic. This gives the impression that there is some kind of rising tide of 'nonbelievers' in America. However, being unaffiliated or identifying as non-religious in a survey tells us nothing about a person's belief or lack of belief in God. Rejection of organized religion, a well documented phenomenon in contemporary social science, is not the same thing as rejecting God. Research suggests that the "Nones" as they now being called, are a a complex and diverse group only a small portion of which could be considered atheists. Some have characterized these Americans as those who "believe but don't belong", which may be a more accurate description than "nonbelievers".

Good without God? I'd settle for good journalism.

According to HRANA, based on reports from the Higher Education Committee of Human Rights Activists in Iran, these students repeatedly appealed to various levels of authorities, including the President of the university, to no avail. The only response they received was: "orders from above". It is important to note that university authorities have expressed that they have been instructed not to present any document or any evidence showing that the students were expelled from the university.

Through the dedicated efforts of several local believers, this core activity is now reaching and benefiting a receptive (and mobile) population. One of the current organizers provides a description of this initiative.

Dear B,

A group of us gives devotions for the recruit side of the base every Sunday from 9:15 to 10:15 and in the process also teaches the Faith. This was started by a sailor in or around 1996 (he is now living in another part of the country, I think), and the devotions have continued ever since. There are 4 of us, each from a different community in the Waukegan and Corinne True (Wilmette) clusters, who currently rotate our presence for the weekly devotions. Two of us have been doing this for years and the other 2 are more recent. We are unique among the religious leaders who lead the various religious services at the base in that we have diversity of gender and race among our representatives. The fact that 2 of us have also been in the military service themselves is also helpful. One of the cluster’s Local Spiritual Assemblies currently sponsors the devotions by purchasing the prayer books. . . .

The recruits who participate in the devotions are at the Great Lakes Naval Station for only 7 short weeks. During those 7 weeks they cannot watch TV, use email, or leave the base. Every hour of the week—except one on Sunday—is planned for them. In their orientation, they receive an overview of the various religious services available at the base, and that is where they hear about us. We do not know what is said about the Bahá’ís, although it appears to be accurate.

The people who attend the devotions range from the merely curious who are trying to avoid an hour of other duty to seekers to Bahá’ís who are new to the Navy. The number of attendees varies from week to week from 1 to 11. The recruits are able to take limited amounts of literature as it must fit in a tiny drawer. We take down the names of the attendees to pray for them in the subsequent week.

We tend to start with a welcome, ask their first names (which they have not heard for a while as only last names are used in the service) and we all offer prayers. Most keep the Gift of Prayer books that we offer. We also take down the names of the attendees to pray for them in the subsequent week.

We often ask the recruits what brings them to our devotions and find the recruits who have come a second time or more are our best teachers. We share all or most of Anna's presentation, depending on the questions that are asked and time allowed. If the attendees like what they hear, they bring friends and more questions the next time. Since everyone is on the base for only 7 weeks, it is rare for us to see someone for 3 or more times, so that has an impact on teaching. We had a few declarations between December and May, but none others since that time.

From a personal perspective—and I believe each of us would also agree—this path of service is one of the most vital and uplifting that I do. For example, last week there were 6 recruits who came to the devotional gathering, 3 returnees and 3 new. Most have enough time left in their training to come back to be with us again. For one of the attendees, this was her last week there, but she took information and expressed interest in learning more. Another was diagnosed with cancer during a health exam, so he was getting a health related discharge to go treat that. He was very interested and welcomed the healing prayers that were said for him. One gains great admiration for these young men and women, many of whom have grown up poor, but who are rising to defend justice and who are serving this country.

In less than 2 years since the friends there launched their IPG, they have been through 7 incredible cycles. What follows is a report of the expansion phase activities of a teaching team, the “Lean on Me Team”, composed entirely of new believers. Just read it. You will cry with happiness.

Dearest Friends,

Today Bahá’u’lláh showered His blessings upon the Bahá’í community. What an honor and joy it was to witness!

First, let me remind you that during the cluster reflection meeting, the “Lean on Me Team”, the first teaching team composed entirely of members from the receptive neighborhood, was formed. And now, they have acted! . . .

They began the expansion phase by hosting a devotional gathering last week, inviting their friends and neighbors.

Today was even greater! In collaboration with the other teams serving in this neighborhood, a fireside and a “Family Day” took place, as well as a devotional hosted by one of the new believers!

There were so many joyous successes today.

One seeker, __, who is the neighbor of a Bahá’í couple and who first attended a devotional in their home during the last cycle, attended one again last week. I, a new believer himself, met __ there and invited her to the "Lean on Me Team" devotional scheduled for the following day. She attended! M and I, both new believers and members of the teaching team, then invited her to their upcoming Fireside. She attended that too. And at the fireside, THEY SHARED ANNA’S CONVERSATION WITH HER. And . . . Yes, she declared!

Next, there was Family Day, which all the teams supported in an effort to build a unified community. It was filled with music, games, hula hooping, meeting new friends and building new bridges.

Finally, the day ended with a devotional at C's! For many months she has tried to host one but it has not worked out for various reasons. But now she was finally able to organize one, and 2 members of the community of interest attended tonight. She was so excited that she was talking about which co-workers she will invite next time.

I am in awe. I can not express the joy and excitement I feel. Is this not what we have been praying for? It will be two years in December since our IPG was launched. Imagine where we will be next year?

A few months ago Francine Silverman, author and creator of the Book Promotion Newsletter – one of my favorites – connected me with Anjuelle Floyd on BlogTalkRadio. Anjuelle is a fiction author (and therapist) on the west coast, who also interviews authors on her radio show Book Talk, Creativity & Family Matters. The great thing about the net is you can listen to these interviews anytime. Listen here to my October 3rd interview with Anjuelle.

Let me share a few highlights and generally where they come up in the interview. First let me say that I appreciated Anjuelle’s approach. She was courteous, asked interesting questions, listened well, and drew from her own experience, so that the interview warmed up as we went along, and felt more like a conversation between friends. Anjuelle’s questions opened topics that became lines of discussion throughout the interview.

The interview began, naturally enough, with questions about Baha’u’llah and how I came to write The Story of Baha’u’llah. Had I always been a Baha’i? she asked, and I talked briefly about my spiritual journey, how it connected to that of my ancestors, and what I had found compellng about Baha’u’llah.

About Baha’u’llah: Who was He and how did His life and message compare to that of the Prophet Muhammad? To Buddha? Early on Anjuelle shared the fact that she is Muslim. and her natural interest allowed us to discuss how my book can bridge understanding between Christians and Muslims.

About writing: What was my process? What worked for me? See 12’-18’ and 66’-69’ for answers and what I share with other writers about creative process.

About Baha’is: How do Baha’is practice their faith? How does the Baha’i Faith differ from Islam? How is it the same? See 19’-49' for a conversation that touched upon a range of topics here: Baha’i marriage, gossip, race relations, community life and attitudes that embrace all children.

“I wonder what would Baha’u’llah say to this?" Anjuelle would say, and at the end, remarked that our interview had “opened up another reality for me.”

Finally, Anjuelle suggested I really needed to get on Twitter!! – She was not only persuasive but after the interview she actually helped me sign up. Now I have another whole new world to explore. So if you’re on Twitter, look me up! I'm @LuminousMusings. You can also find Anjuelle at her blog The Writing Life.

On Luxury:

...Most of the luxuries, and many of the so-called
comforts of life, are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to
the elevation of mankind. With respect to luxuries and comforts, the wisest
have ever lived a more simple and meagre life than the poor. The ancient
philosophers, Chinese, Hindu, Persian, and Greek, were a class than which none
has been poorer in outward riches, none so rich in inward. ... None can be an
impartial or wise observer of human life but from the vantage ground of what we
should call voluntary poverty. ...

On Simple Living (giving up yeast):

...Yet I find it not to be an essential ingredient, and after going without it for a
year am still in the land of the living; and I am glad to escape the
trivialness of carrying a bottleful in my pocket, which would sometimes pop and
discharge its contents to my discomfiture. It is simpler and more respectable
to omit it. Man is an animal who more than any other can adapt himself to all
climates and circumstances. ...

On Superficial
Changes

(and Occupational Dress Codes):

...I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new
wearer of clothes. If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made
to fit? If you have any enterprise before you, try it in your old clothes. All
men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to
be. Perhaps we should never procure a new suit, however ragged or dirty
the old, until we have so conducted, so enterprised or sailed in some way, that
we feel like new men in the old, and that to retain it would be like keeping
new wine in old bottles. . . .

On Fashion (and why we as individuals
are asked to submit to popular notions):

...When I ask for a garment of a particular form, my tailoress tells me gravely,
"They do not make them so now," not emphasizing the "They" at all, as if she
quoted an authority as impersonal as the Fates [goddesses of destiny], and I
find it difficult to get made what I want, simply because she cannot believe that
I mean what I say, that I am so rash. When I hear this oracular sentence,
I am for a moment absorbed in thought, emphasizing to myself each word separately
that I may come at the meaning of it, that I may find out by what degree of
consanguinity They are related to me, and what authority they may have in
an affair which affects me so nearly; and, finally, I am inclined to answer her
with equal mystery, and without any more emphasis of the "they" — "It is true,
they did not make them so recently, but they do now." Of what use this
measuring of me if she does not measure my character, but only the breadth of
my shoulders, as it were a peg to bang the coat on? We worship not the
Graces [goddesses of charm and beauty], nor the Fates, but Fashion. . . .

On the reasons why we do what we do (alienation of labor):

...I cannot believe that our factory system is
the best mode by which men may get clothing.
The condition of the operatives is becoming every day more like that of the English;
and it cannot be wondered at, since, as far as I have heard or observed,
the principal object is, not that mankind may be well and honestly clad,
but, unquestionably, that corporations may be enriched.
In the long run men hit only what they aim at. . . .

Questioning the value of “Improvement”

As with our colleges, so with a hundred "modern improvements";
there is an illusion about them; there is not always a positive advance.
The devil goes on exacting compound interest to the last
for his early share and numerous succeeding investments in them.
Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys,
which distract our attention from serious things.
They are but improved means to an unimproved end,
an end which it was already but too easy to arrive at;
as railroads lead to Boston or New York.
We are in great haste to construct a magnetic telegraph from Maine to Texas;
but Maine and Texas, it may be, have nothing important to communicate....
We are eager to tunnel under the Atlantic
and bring the Old World some weeks nearer to the New;
but perchance the first news that will leak
through into the broad, flapping American ear
will be that the Princess Adelaide has the whooping cough.
After all, the man whose horse trots a mile in a minute
does not carry the most important messages; he is not an evangelist,
nor does he come round eating locusts and wild honey....

Suggesting that we are servants to our tools (domestic
animals require more work than they are worth):

...I am wont to think that men are not so much the
keepers of herds as herds are the keepers of men, the former are so much the
freer. Men and oxen exchange work; but if we consider necessary work only, the
oxen will be seen to have greatly the advantage, their farm is so much the
larger. Man does some of his part of the exchange work in his six weeks of
haying, and it is no boy's play. Certainly no nation that lived simply in all
respects, that is, no nation of philosophers, would commit so great a blunder
as to use the labor of animals....

...Though we have many substantial houses of brick or
stone, the prosperity of the farmer is still measured by the degree to which
the barn overshadows the house. This town is said to have the largest houses
for oxen, cows, and horses hereabouts, and it is not behindhand in its public
buildings; but there are very few halls for free worship or free speech in this
county. . . .

On large buildings (and, by extension, large institutions,
governments, corporations, etcetera)

...The religion and civilization which are barbaric
and heathenish build splendid temples; but what you might call Christianity
does not. Most of the stone a nation hammers goes toward its tomb only. It
buries itself alive. As for the Pyramids, there is nothing to wonder at in them
so much as the fact that so many men could be found degraded enough to spend
their lives constructing a tomb for some ambitious booby, whom it would have
been wiser and manlier to have drowned in the Nile, and then given his body to
the dogs. I might possibly invent some excuse for them and him, but I have no
time for it. As for the religion and love of art of the builders, it is much
the same all the world over, whether the building be an Egyptian temple or the
United States Bank. It costs more than it comes to. The mainspring is vanity,
assisted by the love of garlic and bread and butter. . . .

On Self Sufficiency:

...There is a certain class of unbelievers who
sometimes ask me such questions as, if I think that I can live on vegetable
food alone; and to strike at the root of the matter at once — for the
root is faith — I am accustomed to answer such, that I can live on board
nails. If they cannot understand that, they cannot understand much that I have
to say. . . .

On benefits of simple living:

For more than five years I maintained myself thus
solely by the labor of my hands, and I found that, by working about six weeks
in a year, I could meet all the expenses of living. The whole of my winters, as
well as most of my summers, I had free and clear for study. . . .

...As I preferred some things to others, and
especially valued my freedom, as I could fare hard and yet succeed well, I did
not wish to spend my time in earning rich carpets or other fine furniture, or
delicate cookery, or a house in the Grecian or the Gothic style just yet. If
there are any to whom it is no interruption to acquire these things, and who
know how to use them when acquired, I relinquish to them the pursuit. Some are
"industrious," and appear to love labor for its own sake, or perhaps
because it keeps them out of worse mischief; to such I have at present nothing
to say. . . .

On Doing Good:

... There are those who have used all their arts to
persuade me to undertake the support of some poor family in the town; and if I
had nothing to do — for the devil finds employment for the idle — I
might try my hand at some such pastime as that. However, when I have thought to
indulge myself in this respect, and lay their Heaven under an obligation by
maintaining certain poor persons in all respects as comfortably as I maintain
myself, and have even ventured so far as to make them the offer, they have one
and all unhesitatingly preferred to remain poor. . . .

... There is no odor so bad as that which arises
from goodness tainted. It is human, it is divine, carrion. If I knew for a
certainty that a man was coming to my house with the conscious design of doing
me good, I should run for my life, as from that dry and parching wind of the
African deserts called the simoom, which fills the mouth and nose and ears and
eyes with dust till you are suffocated, for fear that I should get some of his
good done to me — some of its virus mingled with my blood. No — in
this case I would rather suffer evil the natural way. A man is not a good man
to me because he will feed me if I should be starving, or warm me if I should
be freezing, or pull me out of a ditch if I should ever fall into one. I can
find you a Newfoundland dog that will do as much. Philanthropy is not love
for one's fellow-man in the broadest sense. . . .

... Be sure that you give the poor the aid they
most need, though it be your example which leaves them far behind. If you give
money, spend yourself with it, and do not merely abandon it to them. We make
curious mistakes sometimes. Often the poor man is not so cold and hungry as he
is dirty and ragged and gross. It is partly his taste, and not merely his
misfortune. If you give him money, he will perhaps buy more rags with it. . . .

On Benevolence:

...I would not subtract anything from the praise
that is due to philanthropy, but merely demand justice for all who by their
lives and works are a blessing to mankind. I do not value chiefly a man's
uprightness and benevolence, which are, as it were, his stem and leaves. Those
plants of whose greenness withered we make herb tea for the sick serve but a
humble use, and are most employed by quacks. I want the flower and fruit of a
man; that some fragrance be wafted over from him to me, and some ripeness
flavor our intercourse. His goodness must not be a partial and transitory act,
but a constant superfluity, which costs him nothing and of which he is
unconscious. This is a charity that hides a multitude of sins. . . .

...I believe that what so saddens the reformer is
not his sympathy with his fellows in distress, but, though he be the holiest
son of God, is his private ail. Let this be righted, let the spring come to
him, the morning rise over his couch, and he will forsake his generous
companions without apology. My excuse for not lecturing against the use of
tobacco is, that I never chewed it, that is a penalty which reformed
tobacco-chewers have to pay; though there are things enough I have chewed which
I could lecture against. If you should ever be betrayed into any of these
philanthropies, do not let your left hand know what your right hand does, for
it is not worth knowing. Rescue the drowning and tie your shoestrings. Take
your time, and set about some free labor. . . .

How to Live:

We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake,
not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn, which does
not forsake us in our soundest sleep. I know of no more encouraging fact than
the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor.
It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue,
and so to make a few objects beautiful; but it is far more glorious to carve
and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look, which morally
we can do. To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts. Every
man is tasked to make his life, even in its details, worthy of the
contemplation of his most elevated and critical hour. If we refused, or rather
used up, such paltry information as we get, the oracles would distinctly inform
us how this might be done.

Why Thoreau went into the woods:

I went to the woods because I wished to live
deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not
learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had
not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did
I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live
deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like
as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close,
to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it
proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and
publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by
experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion.

Living Slow:

Why should we live with such hurry and waste of
life? We are determined to be starved before we are hungry. Men say that a
stitch in time saves nine, and so they take a thousand stitches today to save
nine tomorrow. As for work, we haven't any of any consequence.
We have the Saint Vitus' dance,
and cannot possibly keep our heads still.

On Disengagement and Disinterest in the world:

And I am sure that I never read any memorable news
in a newspaper. If we read of one man robbed, or murdered, or killed by
accident, or one house burned, or one vessel wrecked, or one steamboat blown
up, or one cow run over on the Western Railroad, or one mad dog killed, or one
lot of grasshoppers in the winter — we never need read of another. One is
enough. If you are acquainted with the principle, what do you care for a myriad
instances and applications? To a philosopher all news, as it is called, is
gossip, and they who edit and read it are old women over their tea. Yet not a
few are greedy after this gossip.

Transcendentalism and consciousness:

...With thinking we may be beside ourselves in a
sane sense. By a conscious effort of the mind we can stand aloof from actions
and their consequences; and all things, good and bad, go by us like a torrent.
We are not wholly involved in Nature. I may be either the driftwood in the
stream, or Indra in the sky looking down on it. I may be affected by a
theatrical exhibition; on the other hand, I may not be affected by an actual
event which appears to concern me much more. I only know myself as a human
entity; the scene, so to speak, of thoughts and affections; and am sensible of
a certain doubleness by which I can stand as remote from myself as from
another. However intense my experience, I am conscious of the presence and
criticism of a part of me, which, as it were, is not a part of me, but
spectator, sharing no experience, but taking note of it, and that is no more I
than it is you. When the play, it may be the tragedy, of life is over, the
spectator goes his way. It was a kind of fiction, a work of the imagination
only, so far as he was concerned. This doubleness may easily make us poor
neighbors and friends sometimes. . . .

The wisdom of fools:

Far off as I lived, I was not exempted from the annual visitation which occurs,
methinks, about the first of April, when
everybody is on the move;
and I had my share of good luck, though there were
some curious specimens
among my visitors. Half-witted men from the almshouse

and elsewhere came to see me; but I endeavored to make them exercise all the
wit they had, and make their confessions to me; in such cases making wit the
theme of our conversation; and so was compensated. Indeed, I found some of them
to be wiser than the so-called overseers of the poor and selectmen of the town,
and thought it was time that the tables
were turned. With respect to wit,
I learned that there was not much difference
between the half and the whole.
One day, in particular, an inoffensive,
simple-minded pauper,
whom with others I had often seen used as fencing stuff,

standing or sitting on a bushel in the fields to keep cattle and himself from
straying, visited me, and expressed a wish to live as I did. He told me, with
the utmost simplicity and truth, quite superior, or rather inferior,
to anything that is called humility, that he was

"deficient in intellect." These were his words. The Lord had made him
so, yet he supposed the Lord cared as much for him as for another. "I have
always been so," said he, "from my childhood; I never had much mind;
I was not like other children; I am weak in the head. It was the Lord's will, I
suppose." And there he was to prove the truth of his words. He was a
metaphysical puzzle to me. I have rarely met a fellowman on such promising ground
— it was so simple and sincere and so true all that he said. And, true
enough, in proportion as he appeared to humble himself was he exalted. I did
not know at first but it was the result of a wise policy. It seemed that from
such a basis of truth and frankness as the poor weak-headed pauper had laid,
our intercourse might go forward to something better than the intercourse of
sages.

This evening begins the Birth of the Bab, a Baha'i holy day. The life of the Bab is a compelling story, which you can read in Part One of my book The Story of Baha’u’llah: Promised One of All Religions. The excerpt below is from my short essay for the holy day and gives you a taste of that story and of why the Bab is a key figure in the story of Baha'u'llah. (Read the whole essay here.)

“Today’s sun is the same sun that rose, over a century ago, on the Kurdish villagers of Mah-Ku in a remote corner of Persia, where, in the summer of 1847, a mountain-fortress kept a new prisoner, the Bab, whose name means “Gate” in Arabic.

“Mah-Ku’s villagers knew nothing about the Bab’s claim to be a Messenger of God. They had not heard about His Mission: to prepare the way for the Promised One of all religions. What they did hear, reverberating from that fortress-prison set in a pocket of the mountain, was the voice of the Bab, strong and melodious, as He chanted verses of such soul-stirring beauty that the villagers were captivated.

“Surely this must be a holy man, they said to one another, and they gathered at the foot of the mountain to begin each day with a blessing from the Bab.

“For nearly a year the Bab was kept in Mah-Ku, housed in a mud-walled cell without even a lamp for light, through the sweltering summer when the sun baked the rocky mountain, through the harsh winter when water froze in droplets on the Bab’s face as He washed. But the Bab let nothing deter Him.

“Day after day He revealed new divine teachings – 8,000 verses – and woven throughout, a myriad allusions to the great Divine Messenger soon to appear – “Him Whom God will make manifest” – eventually known to humanity as Baha’u’llah, the Founder of the Baha'i Faith.

“Two Messengers from God in one lifetime: because humanity was about to step over a critical threshold and enter a whole new era – the maturity of the human race. It was ’Ali Muhammad of Shiraz, Persia, Who by divine appointment took the title “the Bab” meaning “the Gate” and opened the way.

Maturity? Our own human wisdom acknowledges that maturity does not visit us overnight, on a particular birthday. So it should not be surprising to learn that maturity of the human race does not appear instantly, in one historical moment. Maturity by its nature is the fruit of process, with its own cycles and seasons. [READ the rest of the essay.]

http://bahaisiranpersecutions.blogspot.com/2009/10/after-17-months-renewed-delay-in-trial.html After 17 months, renewed delay in trial against Baha'i leaders http://bahaisiranpersecutions.blogspot.com/2009/10/after-17-months-renewed-delay-in-trial.html

From Baha'i World News Service.

GENEVA — Although the trial of seven Baha'i leaders imprisoned in Iran for more than 17 months was scheduled for today, when attorneys and families arrived at the court offices in Tehran they were told it would not take place. No new trial date was given.

"The time has come for these seven innocent people to be immediately released on bail," said Diane Ala'i, the Baha'i International Community's representative to the United Nations in Geneva.

"The seven, whose only 'crime' is their religious belief, are once again in legal limbo, held with no idea of the legal process ahead of them. The whole charade cries out for an end to their unlawful detention," she said.

The seven are Mrs. Fariba Kamalabadi, Mr. Jamaloddin Khanjani, Mr. Afif Naeimi, Mr. Saeid Rezaie, Mrs. Mahvash Sabet, Mr. Behrouz Tavakkoli, and Mr. Vahid Tizfahm.

Official Iranian news accounts have said the seven are to be accused of "espionage for Israel, insulting religious sanctities and propaganda against the Islamic republic." They have also been charged with "spreading corruption on earth."

Last week, it appeared likely that the trial would indeed be postponed again, since attorneys for the seven had not yet received the proper writ of notification.

"The fact that their attorneys did not receive proper notification and that there is no new date for the trial is just one among many gross violations of Iran's own legal procedures, not to mention the violations of due process recognized by international law, that have marked this case from the beginning," said Ms. Ala'i.

A remarkably articulate and forceful condemnation of the ongoing human rights violations against the Baha'is of Iran in the Hungarian parliament.
(Excerpt:)
In their country, in Iran, the Baha'is are not allowed to freely practice their religion and they are exposed to constant persecutions.
The religion is not against anyone or anything. The Baha'i Faith is a world religion whose aim is to unite all the people of the earth.
